George D. Munk
George D. Munk of Gainesville died Wednesday. He was 65. Mr. Munk was born in Watertown, N.Y., and moved to Waldo in 1978 and then to Gainesville about four years ago. He retired as a chief radioman for the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the USS Henly DD-762 and USS William R. Rush DD/DDR714, as well as several shore assignments. He was a Vietnam veteran and received several awards including the Bronze Star with a combat "V," Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier for five years. He retired from the Florida State Division of Forestry after 12 years as a duty officer and wildfire control dispatcher. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lorraine Munk of Gainesville; daughters Melody Carrier of Hornell, N.Y., Dawn Vanwie of Newberry, Georgina Mackie of Waldo and Amy Boe of Florida; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
