John B. Green (1953)
Charles Newbold, fellow shipmate and friend, notified us by email that John B. Green had passed. John, among many others, served in USS William R Rush (DDR-714) from 1952 through 1957. John was a DDR-714 "PLANK OWNER." The photograph above was taken from the 1953 William R. Rush (DDR 714) Cruise Book.
The following obituary was published in the Old Colony Memorial and the Plymouth Bulletin of Plymouth, Massachusetts:
John B. Green
John B. Green, 78, of Plymouth, and formerly of Milton, died Wednesday, July 23, 2007. He was the husband of Theresa E. (Kearney) Green.
Born April 26, 1930, in Haggerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Albert and Gladys Green. He was educated in Haggerstown, and lived in Milton before moving to Plymouth 20 years ago.
Mr. Green served with the U.S. Navy for 20 years and retired as a chief petty officer. He then worked for 22 years at Cambridge Electric. He raised and raced greyhounds for many years and was a member of the Fleet Reserve and the Top 3.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Rohda Weingarten of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, John Kearney of Attleboro and Kevin Kearney of Warwick, R.I.; four sisters-in-law, Mary Keneavy of West Roxbury, Joan Purcell of Franklin, Kathy Tomaielly of Florida and Phyllis Keneavy of Milton; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held from the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., at 9 a.m. Monday, July 28, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral Mass in St. Mary Church in North Plymouth. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, July 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. only. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Plymouth.
