Donald P. Witham (circa 1957)
Norman Porterfield, association recruiter, notified us by email that Donald P. Witham had passed. Donald, among many others, served in USS William R Rush (DD-714) from 1948 through 1951. Donald was a PEARL HARBOR survivor having been stationed onboard USS Phoenix (CL-46) in 1941. The photograph above was taken from The Daily Item showing Donald in his dress uniform around 1957. Donald was a long term member of the USS William R. Rush association. He joined in 1995 and was a member in good standing until his death.

Donald P. Witham

US NAVY Veteran
Mr. Donald P. Witham, age 91, of Pendexter St. Lynn, died Thursday, Dec. 20, in a local nursing home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Claire (Donnelly), with whom he spent 56 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Arthur and Flora (Moore) Witham. He attended Lynn schools and graduated from Lynn English High School, class of 1934.
Mr. Witham served in the U. S. Navy for 20 years, until he retired. He survived the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 while serving on board the light cruiser, USS Phoenix CL-46. He also spent 11 months in Korea on board the destroyer, USS Rush DD-714 during the Korean Conflict. He made two nine month trips to Antarctica under the command of Admiral Byrd. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Engineman in 1957. During his naval service, he received the following campaign medals: American Defense, Asiatic Pacific, European Occupation with clasp, American Theatre, World War II Victory, Philippine Liberation, and Philippine Unit Citation.
He was a member of Bethlehem Masonic Lodge, Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Salem, Boston Consistory, and Aleppo Shrine, where he played in the Oriental Band for over 20 years.
He is survived by one son Donald C. and his wife Julie Witham of Montclair, VA, one daughter Linda A. Witham of Lynn, two grandchildren Patrick Witham of Watertown, NY, Katherine Lenigar of Montclair, VA, and four great-granddaughters. He was the brother of the late Charles M. Witham, a former Lynn Police officer.
Service Information: At Don’s request there will be no visiting hours, and services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
